Overview

This is a multiplayer VR experience. Multiple groups of participants will enter the VR world simultaneously, following the characters to explore the Underworld. The plot and concept are inspired by the '18 Levels of Hell' from traditional Buddhist stories. The characters—including Ox-Head, Horse-Face, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and Diting (Truth Listener)—are all based on figures from traditional mythology.

My Role
I was responsible for all character designs for this project. In the early stages, before any environments or concept art were established, I initiated the design process. I referenced traditional depictions of Hell and, through discussions with the VR Lead Artist, transformed these figures into the current visual style.

Characters

01 / 09
Diting (Young) This is a key character. Diting is a creature of the Underworld, resembling a tiger but with a rhinoceros horn, and serves as the mount for Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. The young Diting guides the audience through the exploration. We wanted its design to look cute yet mystical and intellegent, with distinct features that hint at its adult form. I chose blue and fluorescent turquoise as its main colors and added pointed ears to make its silhouette distinctive.

All characters.

Traditional Hell Scroll illustrations served as the primary reference for the character designs.
