Overview

This VR experience is a fictional narrative rooted in historical events, centering on the identity and cultural heritage of the Atayal indigenous people during the Japanese colonial era in Taiwan. The story follows four Atayal children who, while receiving a Japanese education, strive to preserve their traditional spirit. The title, Hongu U'tux (Atayal for "Rainbow"), echoes the imagery of the "Rainbow Bridge" found in Atayal folklore.

My Role
I was responsible for designing all characters, the key visual poster, and the cover art for the educational video series. Given the focus on indigenous culture, the character designs and costumes required strict adherence to the Atayal style of that era. Our team conducted extensive historical research and refined the designs based on feedback from academic experts.

Characters

01 / 11
Badu (Left: Early design concept; Right: Kimono version for the exhibition scene). Badu is the younger brother of the main character, Walis. Compared to Walis, Badu is more dedicated to tradition and aspires to inherit his father's mantle as a hunter.

VR Screenshots Captured from the final VR environment created by our team.

Detailed pattern designs for Han Chinese, Japanese, and Atayal clothing.

Key Visual Poster

I placed a silhouette of the 3D Walis model in the center, filling his body with the opening scene of the VR experience. The shadows on the ground depict him wearing kimono and traditional Atayal attire, highlighting his struggle with identity.

Educational Video Series

Designed for the project's YouTube series introducing Atayal history and culture. I used a collage style for the covers, using the "Rainbow" (from the VR story name) as a visual motif, with ribbons of different colors connecting each video cover.
